What the service involves
When you move to the UK, your belongings go through customs just like any other goods. Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief lets you bring in your personal belongings free of duty and VAT – provided HMRC has approved your ToR01 application in advance.
The application is made online, in English, and the approval number must be quoted on the customs declaration. Without it, your belongings may be charged duty and VAT or held at the border until the matter is resolved.
We guide you through the whole process: we check whether you qualify for the relief, help with the application and the packing list, and when your goods reach the border we submit the declaration and give the carrier the references they need.

Transfer of Residence relief conditions
You qualify for the relief if you meet all of these conditions:
- You have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months
- You are moving to the UK permanently
- The belongings are yours and you have used them for at least 6 months (including a car)
- The belongings are for your personal use, not for a business
- You bring them in within 12 months of your move
Not covered by the relief
- Alcohol and tobacco products
- New items or items used for less than 6 months
- Items for a second home or a business
- Commercial vehicles and tools used to earn a living
For 12 months after import, goods covered by the relief must not be sold, hired out, lent or given away – otherwise duty and VAT become payable.
