Preparation versus release
Declaration preparation depends on complete information, while release depends on controls and the procedure. Separate these stages when commissioning the work. An agent can prepare documents efficiently but does not control customs inspection times. A fixed universal turnaround promise would be misleading.
Where delays arise
An unclear goods description, missing origin evidence, incorrect EORI or unresolved charges can require clarification. Inspection instructions or an official document request are different issues. Respond to the specific request rather than repeatedly sending the same invoice.
Finding the current stage
Ask for the reference, declaration status and outstanding action. Is it rejected, accepted, under examination or awaiting payment? Saying clearance is ongoing is too vague to act on. For groupage, establish whether the delay concerns your consignment or another load on the vehicle.
Before you commission the work
- Send complete information before arrival.
- Clarify ambiguous descriptions.
- Agree payment arrangements.
- Ask for the specific status and outstanding action.
What to watch out for
Do not confuse agent preparation time with an authority’s decision time. Acceptance does not necessarily mean immediate goods release.
