A number for Great Britain
Activities requiring EORI in Great Britain generally need a GB-prefixed number. The need depends on the activity and operator. EORI is a customs identifier, not proof of declaration acceptance or tax payment. It is not an authorisation for every procedure.
EU and Northern Ireland
An EU or XI number may be needed for EU or Northern Ireland activities under the applicable conditions. Simply crossing a country does not establish which numbers every party needs. Assess importer, exporter, carrier and representative roles separately.
Checking before transport
Match the number to the correct business and validation system. A typo or another operator’s number can obstruct filing. Confirm details after business changes. When requesting help, provide establishment, route and role; asking only for an EORI may lead to the wrong application route.
Before you commission the work
- Provide establishment and business role.
- Identify GB, EU or Northern Ireland activities.
- Validate in the appropriate service.
- Do not use another business’s EORI.
What to watch out for
Not every business needs GB, EU and XI numbers simultaneously. Requirements follow the actual customs activities.
